On A Day in The Life of this week, we had a chat with Angie Wong, a social media content creator and specialist whose Instagram account reached over 200K followers at its height. We covered her journey as a social media specialist here.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the role of being a Social Media Speciliast.

OpenDoors: What is a Social Media Specialist?

Angie: Social Media Specialists are responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring the Social Media strategy of a company or brand. Many times, these specialists create content that resonates with the interests of the intended audience, and the goal is to gradually achieve superior customer engagement and intimacy, website traffic, and revenue by strategically exploiting all aspects of the social media marketing roadmap.

OpenDoors: What tips would you give to someone who is trying to grow a following on social media?

Angie: In order to grow a user base and attract more viewers, it is important to post engaging content at the right timing. I would suggest adjusting the posting times to cater to your specific audience base. For example, since students are one of the largest audiences for our page on Instagram, I avoid posting during school hours. Another important best practice is to keep followers engaged at all times. To achieve that, content creators can utilize the stories feature on Instagram to highlight important news, interact with followers, and answer questions. Consistency is key and posting at a regular time on a daily basis can create anticipation and engagement. Lastly, it is important to know the trends in the content you are creating. Following other pages can allow you to stay updated with the happenings and learn from others’ success.

OpenDoors: How has your life changed since becoming a Social Media Specialist?

Angie: My life hasn’t changed much after becoming a Social Media Specialist. Since both co-founders and I have our own career aspirations, we still have a full-time job while managing the social media page on the side. As mentioned before, our page started as a platform for us to share our passion for films with others, so we treat the success of our content as a bonus. For me, I believe that it is important to strike a balance between work and personal life. Therefore, although my team and I do put in a lot of effort to keep our page growing, we always make sure to have a good work-life balance so that we could work and grow better as a team.

OpenDoors: What is your favorite part about being a Social Media Specialist?

Angie: The positive reinforcements from followers are definitely my favorite part about being a Social Media Specialist. It is very rewarding to see people scroll through our page on the streets and to know that people are engaging in the content we create. I also love helping others discover new experiences that they would have otherwise not known about. It is the little things in everyday life that make me feel accomplished for being a Social Media Specialist.
